I can’t remember when I first heard of the underwater ballroom in Whitley (Lea) Park. But I remember the breathless wonder at seeing the first pictures of it, the hurried bookmarking of links, a pin on a Pinterest board, a scribbled note in a notebook somewhere…I had an idea about where I wanted to use it but never had the chance to settle in.
So, when my dear friend Stephanie Burgis, shared links about this selfsame underwater ballroom and what a great setting it would be on Twitter, I could not resist saying as how I too would like to set something there and had been planning to do so for years. Suddenly other authors started chiming in about how they would also like to write something and that if we cared to do an anthology, they wanted in.
The Underwater Ballroom Society was conceived then in those rapid-fire minutes on Twitter, and it’s truly been one of the most enjoyable projects I’ve ever worked on. Visit the underwater ballroom as a smugglers’ cave in magic-becalmed Kernow, as the centerpiece of a Martian hotel, as a magical escape on a decaying estate, as the scene of a magical heist, as the site of a grand rock-n-roll showdown in Faery. Wherever you land, I hope you’ll love dancing under the waves with us.
